Article Excerpt: Winter storm Pandora impacted Huntsville and Madison County driving conditions severely on Friday and early Saturday morning. Snow and sleet quickly caused Interstate 565 to become a parking lot beginning around 2pm Friday with slip and slide accidents growing as the day slid toward evening. The wintry mix became a light misting of rain that turned to black ice. Early Saturday morning, starting just after midnight, the temperatures began to climb causing melting black ice to form a water layer over the ice making all roads with mild to steep grades impossible to climb. Ryland Pike, near Maysville and Gurley became an obstacle course temporarily with vehicles stranded in ditches and abandoned across the road. The city and county seemed to nearly abandon any idea of improving road conditions. Police and State Troopers roamed the streets assisting stranded motorists and tending to numerous accidents. The Postal Service Mail Processing Facility in Huntsville continued to receive and process mail from across North Alabama as trucks were seen entering the locked security gates with weary drivers struggling to deliver the mail. Although, one bystander mentioned that the Birmingham Mail Facility cancelled all its tractor trailer deliveries to and from Birmingham. - Winter Storm Pandora
