Local artist Wade Wharton murdered: A brilliant artist but the local City of Huntsville government was not a friend of his art

Local artist Wade Wharton murdered: A brilliant artist but the local City of Huntsville government was not a friend of his art

This city has lost a brilliant artist to a senseless murder. Not only should we be saddened by the loss of this kind and talented man, but we should also be saddened by the way he was treated by the local City of Huntsville government. An article from RoadsideAmerica.com describes the manner in which he was treated by the local government here in this hi-tech city. An excerpt from that article reads as follows:

Conversely, the City of Huntsville was far too attentive in 2008, when it threatened to throw out all of Wade's sculptures. "If Wharton thinks he's got art out there, we've got a bunch of it at the garbage dump," Wade recalled one official's remarks. The city and the artist eventually compromised: Wade could keep everything he considered "art" but had to trash everything else.

It is shameful that he was treated in this manner in a city that boast such an eclectic mix of people and industry. The RoadsideAmerica.com article beautifully describes the art of Mr. Wharton in addition to identifying the bumpy road he had in pursuing his unique talent. Like many artist, his true value to the art world may be even more appreciated in his death. In turn maybe his murder will also help to focus on his greatness while helping to merge a greater appreciation for art by those that saw his art as garbage. The diversity of the 'Rocket City' is what truly makes it a one-of-a-kind mecca of wonderful culture and economy.

Fortunately, the Huntsville Botanical Gardens saw the value in his work and has shared it with the community of Huntsville with the Wade Wharton Exhibit. Let's all try to remember Mr. Wade Wharton for what he gave us all as opposed to what we have lost to his murder.

Rest in peace Wade Wharton.
